How can it be that these hardships remain?

Are you able to imagine seeking shelter for your family in a space no wider or longer than your dining room table? And not only seeking a few moments of shelter there, but living and sleeping there for months on end? As detailed in my book, Indian.English., for a period of time, my mother did just that, seeking shelter for me and my sister under the stairs of a dilapidated building. It was all we could do at the time and my parents worked hard just to secure this space (a bit of shelter for us).

The small piece of floor on which we resided was wet, slimy, dirty, and badly in need of repair. It was also our only place on which to sleep, so we covered it with plastic to avoid resting directly upon its vermin-infested boards. We had shelter from the elements and other external threats, but not much more! People bathed, washed their clothes and utensils, used the space as a toilet and much more and this was just one foot away from we placed our heads down.

Sadly, still today, there are many families struggling with conditions much like those that my family endured under those stairs and far too many are enduring even worse conditions and situations. These families struggling with undue hardships today have done nothing wrong. They are simply a victim of circumstance, living in the wrong place at the wrong time, without the resources to escape.

My story can be read at www.indianenglishthebook.com. At Remedia Trust Foundation, we are working hard to improve the conditions for these unfortunate victims of time and place. We are on the ground providing food, medical services, & education to those in need, but we need your help to continue our work. Your donation can help alleviate the struggles of one more hungry child, one poor old person who is unable to stand, one little girl who wonder amongst millions looking for hope and who just needs a chance at a better life. Won’t you please help?
